Kohima, Oct. 12 (EMN): The Kohima District Badminton Association (KDBA) has congratulated Joseph Sumi, a Police Inspector in Nagaland Police and a 15 times state singles and doubles champion till date, for his recent success in a badminton event in Hyderabad.

The prolific player from Nagaland, who was bought by the Hyderabad Smashers in an auction, helped his team win the first edition of All India Hyderabad Masters Badminton League held at Hyderabad from Sep. 21- 23.

The KDBA issued a press release on Fri. Oct. 12, stating that the lefty player, partnering with Ajay Dayal showed excellent class of badminton with his variety of strokes and helped his team win the coveted title.

The wristy left hander was also adjudged the best player of the league.

Joseph Sumi, a passionate badminton player, who is well known for his deceptive play, has been representing the state for so many years now. Despite being 35+, he is still representing the state in the zonal and national championships and that he feels, it should have been a younger player in his place. He laments that the much required support from the government and the society is not as forthcoming as it should be.

Joseph Sumi has appreciated the Nagaland Badminton Association (NBA) for bringing a foreign coach to train the players for the ongoing North East Open in Dimapur. He was also of the opinion that individuals with resources, who also have an inclination towards and passion for the sport should come together and do something to promote the sport.

“In Nagaland, sponsorships by individuals is less heard of.  We need more patrons for the game”.

The simple message from the champion is, “I struggled so much, I worked hard, I went through a lot to get to the place where I am today… I see no shortcut to success… dedication and hard work will take you to better places in life, nothing else will…..”
