Kohima: 893 IPC cases registered in five years, second only to Dimapur

Dimapur, Nov. 15: Kohima with a population of over 99,039 is the second most populated district of the state after Dimapur, according to the 2011 census. It covers an area of 1,463 sq km, out of the total area of 16,579 sq km, making it the seventh largest district of the state.

The comparative crime data under Indian Penal Code (IPC) provided by the (Nagaland) Police Head Quarters (PHQ) from 2013 till June 30 this year shows that out of the total 5785 IPC crime cases registered, Kohima district accounted for 893 which is the second highest in the state after Dimapur which recorded 3250 cases.

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS), introduced on June 9, 2009, are being installed in almost all the states of the country; and is headquartered in New Delhi.

An official from the Kohima SP office informed Eastern Mirror that CCTNS has been installed in all the police stations of Kohima. However, due connectivity problems, only North PS and South PS are said to be working online while the other stations work offline.

The crime heads under IPC as provided by the PHQ includes murder, attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rape, kidnapping and abduction, dacoity, robbery, burglary, theft, criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, FICN (counterfeit), extortion, rioting and ‘other IPC.’

The data shows that the IPC crimes happening across the state capital have decreased constantly since 2015. The year 2017 witnessed least number with 133 registered cases. Also, the data shows that crime on theft ranks the most during all the given years.

Altogether, Kohima witnessed 330 theft crimes with 47 cases in 2013; 75 cases in 2014; 78 cases in 2015; 54 cases in 2016; 49 cases in 2017; and 27 cases from January till June 30 of this year.

Interestingly, the capital’s district witnessed no registered cases under dacoity and rioting crimes from 2013 till June 30 of this year; while counterfeit crimes happened only once in the year 2013.

Crime under ‘murder’ witnessed as many as 32 cases during the said years. 2013 witnessed the most with 11 cases while this year till June 30 had just one registered case. 2014 witnessed three cases, 2015 and 2016 with five cases each and 2017 witnessed eight murder cases.

28 cases under ‘attempt to murder’ were registered during the said years. 2015 witnessed the most with eight cases. 2013 witnessed three cases, 2014 with six cases; 2016 with six cases and 2017 with five cases. As per the data, no case was registered this year till June 30.

Though Nagaland has been constantly declared as the safest place for women as per the National Crime Records Bureau statistics, yet crime incidents against women continue to feature in the chart.

During the last six years, in Kohima alone there were 39 cases of rape recorded.  The year 2015 witnessed the most with 10 cases. 2013 witnessed five cases, 2014 with nine cases, 2016 with seven cases, 2017 with five cases and 2018 (till June 30) witnessed three cases.

As per the data, kidnapping and abduction cases witnessed 38 cases, robbery crime witnessed 20 registered cases, burglary crimes with 44 registered cases.

Also the data shows that criminal breach of trust witnessed nine cases with nil cases during 2014 and 2016. Cheating witnessed 56 registered cases from the year 2013 till June 30 of this year.

Twenty forgery cases were registered during the said years, while as many as 120 extortion cases were registered during the said years. Other IPC crimes witnessed 152 registered cases.
