Kigwema school declared plastic-free

Dimapur, Oct. 17 (EMN): The government high school at Kigwema in Kohima district has been declared plastic-free on October 15 during a function at Kigwema village with the initiative of the Kohima Forest Division, the DIPR informed on Wednesday.
Kohima’s district Forest officer Rongsenlemla Imchen was appreciative of the school for their active participation in the initiative. She highlighted the importance of the role of students in fighting plastic pollution especially with regard to ‘single use plastic items,’ the DIPR stated.

The Forest officer said that the plastic-free school program is part of the Green Initiative Program of the division. It focuses on schools and pursues commitments toward environment-friendly activities, the DIPR stated. The headmistress of the school, Kevitsieno thanked the department for the initiative and assured that the school will continue to pursue keeping the environment clean and keep the ‘green commitments.’

The chairman of Kigwema Biodiversity & Wild Life Committee, Ruokuovikho Chale, also expressed
appreciation for the initiative to spread environmental awareness in the region. The students and the
faculties gave commitments by reading out a pledge, the DIPR stated.
