Diphu, June 23 (EMN): The 67th Foundation Day of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) was held at Joysing Doloi Auditorium with Sarbananda Sonawal, Chief Minister of Assam gracing the celebration as the chief guest.

Sarbananda Sonowal, in his speech, said Karbi Anglong hill district was blessed with beautiful natural environment and encouraged the citizens to preserve it with utmost care.

He also said that the overall development of a society depends on education and empowered youth and stressed on the point for the parents and elders to impart the importance of education and self empowerment to their children.

Delving on the recent mob lynching incident that occurred in the region, Sonowal asked the gathering to erase the mentality of accepting superstitions and hearsay as the dogma to regulate one’s life by pointing to the recent lynching of two youths from Guwahati on the mere suspicion of being child lifters.

The CM also promised that the offenders in the mob lynching will not be spared and punished under the court of law as deemed fit of their degree of involvement in the case. He also urged the people to live together in peace and harmony with all section of people irrespective of their caste, creed and religion.

Sonowal, during his speech also announced a pension scheme for old age and widow which will be distributed for the entire district of Assam from Oct. 2.

Tuliram Ronghang KAAC, CEM, in his speech said, in earlier government no special packages have been received either from the state and central government but KAAC have received a special package amounting of INR 100 Cr.  and also that under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonawal, INR 260 Cr. has been received and INR 10 Cr. have been already distributed to every MAC constituency for the development of their respective areas.

Ronghang also stated that the long standing demand of Karbi Anglong people Article 244(A) need to be implemented but added that the main importance will be given on the development of Karbi Anglong region first.

During the celebration KAAC authority awarded Semson Sing award in the field of literature was granted to Dhaneswar Engti; best KAAC Employee Award to Khonsing Ronghang; best sports persons award to Sonia Marak and Dhon Killing; posthumous award to late Raidang Eng of Khorsing Terang award and meritous award to Tannaz Khan ( who scored 547 ranks in State level in HS Final (Arts) in 2017, and 1st position in Karbi Anglong .

Earlier, in the morning, Deputy Speaker, Ritish Enghi hoisted the tri colour flag at the KAAC Secretariat compound.  The meeting were attended by Member of Parliament, Birensing Engti, Hills Area Development (HAD), Minister Sum Ronghang,  Dr. Numal Momin MLA , Joyram Engleng MLA and a host of government officials and leaders.
