Dimapur, August 2 (EMN): More than 100 youth including pastors and church leaders of Jakhama Baptist Church (JBC) have pledged to uphold clean election.
The pledge to this effect was taken at a seminar on clean election organised by the youth department of Jakhama Baptist Church (JBC) on July 29 with Kezhokhoto Savi, president NVCO, as the speaker.
Speaking on the occasion Savi said, “The time has come for every citizen to realise that one’s vote decides the fate of the five years and beyond and it is important to vote for a candidate who has genuine concern for public, honest, qualified, competent, bearing strong moral responsibility ready to sacrifice on moral ground and a candidate of having integrity.”
He urged on clean election for a better society and brighter future for the generation and insisted that illegal means and corrupt practices should be stopped at the village and state level. The root cause of corruption, according to him, is the unfair means of conduct of election especially State general elections where the contesting candidates spend “huge money” for illegal means such as buying or selling votes, threat, supply of liquor etc.
He said the electorates need to realise the need for a political party who will be people friendly and ready to sacrifice for corrupt-free, works against corruption not only in words but in deeds.
Savi said he will vote for a candidate who is not so thirsty for power and greed for money. He said greed for power and money are the two factors which bring divisions amongst the so called elected candidates leading to the extent of fighting for the post of chief minister/ minister berth/ portfolio.
He, therefore, said the opportunity has now come for the people to bring about a corruption-free government in this democratic system of government. He said it will be possible only when the conduct of election is ‘clean.’
