JAC calls 48-hour total shutdown in Manipur against custodial killing of police constable

Imphal, April 2 (EMN): Following an emergency meeting, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the custodial killing of Md Manjur Ahmad on Tuesday decided to call 48-hour total shutdown starting from today from, April 3 in Manipur to seek justice for the deceased.

“Since there is no positive response from the concerned on the earlier both demands of booking the culprits and handing over the case to CBl, the JAC has decided to intensify multiple agitations,” said JAC convenor Md Salim.

Md Manjur Ahmad, a Manipur police constable who had earlier been suspended in connection with escape of Th Nando, a leader of proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (Nando group) from JNIMS hospital in Imphal East district on March 26, died in the police custody on March 30.

A 34 year old constable who hailed from Yairipok Ningthounai of Imphal East district was posted at Reserve Line, Imphal east district police.

The 48-hour state-wide shutdown will be in effect from 6 am of April 3 till 6 am of April 5.

However, the committee has informed that there will be relaxation for the delegates of NE Conference which is organized by MANPAC along with all emergencies and essential services as well.

JAC urged the civil society organisations, student, women and well wishers to support the agitation.

Family members of the deceased and JAC members demanded justice and immediate action against the personnel involved in the case. They also refused to take the body of the deceased after the completion of the autopsy.

The Manipur government had already instituted a magisterial inquiry into the death of Ahmad and asked the inquiry authority to submit its report within 30 days.
