Dimapur, Feb. 19: In the past 24 hours, isolated light rainfalls have been reported in the northern districts of Nagaland. Places like Dimapur, Kohima, Mon, Longleng, Mokokchung, and Tuensang have experienced traces of rain and shall continue to receive intermittent rains in the next 24 hours, according to forecast. Thereafter, weather will turn dry. However, the sky may be partly cloudy.

According to an update from Skymet Weather on Tuesday, another spell of rain and thundershower activities are foreseen around Feb. 24 and the intensity could go up between Feb. 25 to the 27th. The minimums will see a rise by 2°C to 3°C between Feb. 22 and 23rd because of increase in clouding and humid south-easterlies, it informed.

During this time, there are chances of few moderate spells with isolated intense spell of thundershowers. Chances of hailstorm were not ruled out.

Weather would once again start clearing up by Mar. 1 and the maximums would rise by 3°C to 4°C, the update informed.

For Nagaland and the rest of the Northeast states, February is normally not a rainy month. Lesser number of rainy spells can be attributed to lack of weather systems. The rains over Nagaland and Northeast states are seen this time due to the easterly movement of western disturbance, which travel towards Arunachal Pradesh and Assam—affecting Nagaland in the process.

At times, the cyclonic circulation also develops over Assam and its adjoining areas due to influx of moist winds from the Bay of Bengal, which also enhances the rainfall activities. However, these weather systems are not very frequent but this year, the western disturbances have been visiting the Himalayas at very regular intervals, the update informed.
