Indigenous games competition concludes at Kohima

Dimapur, Dec. 14 (EMN): The two- day event of 1st Indigenous Games Competition organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports in commemoration of Dr. T. Ao Birth Centenary concluded at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, in Kohima on Fri. Dec. 14, stated an update from the DIPR.

Director YRS, Akumla Chuba  who attended the valedictory function as the special guest said that the Department of Youth resource took the initiative of this indigenous  games in commemoration  of  Dr .T Ao to make people aware of the legend who has contributed towards our society. She said that through hardworking and determination one can achieve things whether it be sports or in any other fields and make a mark like the legendary Dr.T. Ao. She further said that indigenous games competition is a good platform to promote and showcase our rich culture and identity of the Nagas and also make aware to the younger generation to carry forward the rich culture our forefathers have left behind.

She also encouraged all the participants to put more effort and carry the spirit of essence of success and bring laurels to the state. She added that it is a year-long event which will culiminate on Jan. 28, 2019.

Altogether 129 participants from 11 Districts participated in the indigenous competition. There was four indigenous games in the competition; tug of war, cock fight, stilt bamboo walk race, greased bamboo climbing.

The winner of tug of war was bagged by Dimapur district and received a cash prize of INR 20,000 and certificate. Second and third positions were bagged by Kohima and Phek which carried a cash prize of INR 15,000 and INR 10,000 each and certificate.

In cock fight, Thungyamo Lotha from Wokha district emerged the winner and walked home with a a cash prize of INR 7000 and certificate. Second and third was won by Toiko Yeptho from Zunheboto and Langphung from Longleng district who walked away with a cash prize of INR 5000 and INR 3000 each and certificates.

In stilt bamboo walk race, Vilopu from Zunheboto district emerged as the winner and walked away with a cash prize of INR 7000 and certificate. Second and third winner was bagged by Thito from Phek district and Shilukaba from Mokokchung and received a cash prize of INR 5000 and INR 3000 each and certificates.

In greased bamboo climbing, the winner was Mhathung from Wokha district. Second and third was won by Virasato Kehie from Kohima and Vesa Kezo from Phek district. The winners walked home with a cash prize of INR 7000, INR 5000 and, INR 3000 each.
