India to host World Environment Day on June 5

Dimapur, May 24 (EMN): The Government of India will be hosting the World Environment Day 2018 under the theme ‘beat plastic pollution’ in collaboration with the United Nations Environment programme on June 5. A press release from the department of Information and Public Relations informed on Thursday.

June 5th being a prestigious event, is a step towards the commitment to undertake global leadership in addressing all forms of pollution, reducing emissions and investing in sustainable development efforts. This is an opportunity for collective efforts to reduce the use of plastic, the update stated. 

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has wished for the students be encouraged to refuse, reduce, and re-use plastic product in their daily uses, the press release added.

The World Environment Day is a reaffirmation of national efforts towards sustainable development and mainstreaming environmental concerns in the national developmental agenda.

Secretary of the University Grants Commission, the ministry of HRD, Prof. Rajnish Jain has directed the colleges and universities to undertake activities from this indicative list on June 5.

  1. College and university level networking activities on mass awareness on disposal of plastic.
  2. Mini Marathon (Envirothon)
  3. Restrict single-use plastic water bottle and encourage use of refillable bottles instead.
  4. Ban take-away coffee cup, lunch wrapped in disposable plastic packaging, plastic bags, disposable foodservice cups, plates, and containers made in polystyrene foam, plastic straws, etc.
  5. Cleanliness drives under Swachch Bharat Mission in municipalities
  6. Public awareness through cultural programmes, nukkad natak (Hindi for street theatre)
  7. College and university level afforestation programme
  8. Mobile exhibition of forests wealth
  9. Special programme for differently-abled children
  10. Involvement of National Cadet Corps, National Social Service, eco-clubs, and students in mass awareness campaigns
