India records 50% annual increase in cybercrimes

Mokokchung, June 19 (EMN): Cybercrimes in India is increasing at a rate of 50 percent every year. They also said that 70 percent of the crimes are committed by young people between the age group of 16-35 years who indulge in the crime either intentionally or unintentionally.
This was informed by Hankiumong and Ninoto Zhimomi, who are both police officers in the rank of DSP, during the seminar on ‘Social media and cyber crime,’ held at Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung on June 19.

They also informed that every 10 minutes a cybercrime is committed in India and more often the cases are related to social media such as posting intimate / obscene private picture and videos.

In this connection, the police officials who were speaking as a resource persons for the seminar, cautioned the students that impersonation (using of fake account), cyber stalking, bullying and exposing confidential information come under the purview of Information Technology Act, 2000.

Resource persons advised the students to first authenticate videos or other related materials before reposting or circulating on social media platforms.

They also advised the students to be cautious about increasing cyber scams like African scams, debit card scams etc.
Students were enlightened and educated on how to use social media platforms in a responsible manner.

The seminar was organised taking into account the increase misuse of social media platforms to spread rumours and misinformation thereby leading to social unrest and tensions even to the extending of causing deaths.
