MOKOKCHUNG, AUG 29: Institute of Communications and Information Technology (ICIT), Mokokchung celebrated its Freshers Day today at the ICIT Academic Block. Altogether 109 students have enrolled for different courses this year despite the institute's stipulated limit of just 90 students for an academic session.
Principal ICIT Longmedang encouraged the freshers to be aware of the importance of time management as IT students and to uphold the dignity and integrity of the institute. He further said, "We are trying to make this institute into a centre of excellence and it is upto the students to make it so".
ICIT is initiated by the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU). It is the third Nagaland polytechnic institute, the other two being Government Polytechnic of Kohima (GPK) and Kelhoshe Polytechnic of Atoizu (KPA). Located at about 15kms away from Mokokchung, it lies near neighbouring Zunheboto district. The entire campus measuring about 25 acres was donated by former state Chief Minister and current Governor of Maharastra SC Jamir in the year 2002.
ICIT was established in the year 2003 with the aid of World Bank. An ISO certified institute, it was formerly located at the old Town Hall, Mokokchung with just 2 classrooms, limited number of faculty members and 23 students. The Institute offers three year courses in three different branches- Computer Engineering (CE), Electronic and telecommunications and Information Technology (IT).
The institute was shifted to the present incomplete campus at Ungma in 2006. Presently, there are 10 classrooms, 3 computer labs with 60-70 Computers and wi-fi facilities, a library that holds about 8000 different books, three electronic labs and two buses. The faculty consists of 26 members including the non-teaching staff. A total of 300 students are currently enrolled at the institute.
The institute also provides hostel facilities for both boys and girls. However, the boys are currently being accommodated in the girls’ hostel since the boys facility within the campus is still under construction. The Watsu Mungdang Building at Mokokchung Town is occupied as the ICIT's girls’ hostel.
With no proper sanitation facilities within the institute, deplorable condition of the road that leads to the institute and with the institute building, the boys hostel and the community building still under construction the campus lies in a pitiable state.
When asked, the principal informed that the project to construct the institute was time-bound but ‘unfortunately, due to the contractor's inefficiency the institute could not be completed as expected’
