IMPHAL, FEB 22: Non-congress political parties in Manipur on Wednesday reaffirmed to urge the Election Commission of India (ECI) to declare proxy votes invalid in the recently concluded assembly polls. Manipur assembly poll and re-poll was held on January 28 and February 4. CPI state secretary Dr M Nara Singh speaking to media after the joint meeting here at the conference hall of Hotel Imphal said that they have taken a decision in this regard today. He added that the meeting also authorized him to submit a Memorandum along with copies of resolutions to ECI.

SHILLONG, FEB 22: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Meghalaya has opened a call centre to solicit views from the public in order to bring about a direct connect between the people with the policy makers in the state assembly. Conrad K Sangma said on Wednesday that the decision to use the latest technology aims at making the legislators from the opposition bench equipped to air the right perception of the people on developmental issues. “This is a mechanism to make the peoples’ voice reach the assembly through us”.

IMPHAL, FEB 22: Even as the state police claimed to have gunned down a suspected abductor in an operation yesterday, the family members of the said deceased, claimed that the victim was a mere mason. Speaking to media a day after the incident today, Longjam Ongbi Rani (27) wife of the said mason Longjam Dhamen (32) of Keibi Sallam village in Imphal East district who was killed in a police operation yesterday said that her husband was an innocent daily bread earner for a six member family including two children.

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (AFP): Researchers digging through mud in northeast India have discovered a new family of legless amphibians in a rare scientific breakthrough detailed in a study released on Wednesday. The family of burrowing, tailless creatures was identified by scientists working for five years in remote Indian states including Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
