EASTERN MIRROR: When did you realize you wanted to work in fashion? How did you get into fashion?
Bethunglo Ngullie: To be a designer was my childhood dream, I realized the importance of fashion as I grew up. We see many trends coming up from time to time and the oldest trends are transformed and modernized.
I am very much inspired by the big designers of the fashion industry coming up with new ideas, which motivates me to be part of this industry.EASTERN MIRROR: There are ethnic influences in your designs, is it something to do with the Naga background? What is the response of people outside the region towards ethnic touch in your pieces?
Bethunglo Ngullie: I always had the fantasy to promote our Naga’s rich fabrics and culture, mix it with my innovative designs and introduce it to the outer world. So whenever I get chance to do shows outside Northeast I always design my outfits with a touch of traditional fabrics.
People outside show much interest in all the fabrics of Northeast. Earlier people were not familiar with Naga fabrics but now they want to try new types of designs and fabrics which I find very encouraging.

EASTERN MIRROR: Tell us about your collections. How did you find your design style?
Bethunglo Ngullie: Well, my collections include cocktail dress, evening gowns, short dress and lot more. I design dresses through my fascination and sometimes follow cosmopolitan and few fashion magazines to keep up with the trends.

EASTERN MIRROR: How much does travel influence your designs?
Bethunglo Ngullie: When I travel I come across many people with different clothing and designs. Some do not prefer modern style so when I design I make sure that my designs are a blend of modernization and simplicity yet pleasing to the eye.

EASTERN MIRROR: Where do you look for inspiration and how does that inspiration turn into reality?
Bethunglo Ngullie: I am inspired seeing Fashion Week and I hope to be a part of it someday to showcase my creativity.

EASTERN MIRROR: How would you describe your personal fashion style? And which is the biggest fashion turn off for you?
Bethunglo Ngullie: To be honest I like wearing clothes that are comfortable and I would describe my style as simple yet stylish.
As a designer I respect every design. For me no matter what design one wears one must know how to carry it and be comfortable in no matter they are wearing. And yes……the person who do not carry it well is a big turn off for me coz its not pleasing to see a person uncomfortable and conscious with what he or she is wearing. By doing this they are doing injustice to the particular piece too.

EASTERN MIRROR: How has living in a city with a huge and complex fashion scene influenced your imagination? How do you balance that with the demands of your clients?
Bethunglo Ngullie: Living in a city has helped me to keep myself updated with the latest trends and keep my imaginations high so that I fulfill the expectations of the people. Since I am living in Guwahati, which is of course part of the Northeast region, it is quite easy for me as the people out here are fashionable and they know fashion which makes my job a lot easier to deal with.

EASTERN MIRROR: As a designer, what has been the turning point of your life?
Bethunglo Ngullie: My turning point of life was when I went for Northeast Fest in Delhi in 2014. I was overwhelmed by the response of the people there. Since then I have received many more opportunities and work here in the Northeast.

EASTERN MIRROR: What do you wear, apart from your own pieces?
Bethunglo Ngullie: I am not a brand freak. I usually design my own outfit but other than that I like street style outfits.

EASTERN MIRROR: Do you agree that Nagaland is also the center of Indian fashion? And which other Indian cities are growing fast as the fashion capitals according to your experience?
Bethunglo Ngullie: Being very honest if you visit Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore or any other metro cities you will find only the Northeasterners most fashionable compared to the local people over there. Northeasterners keep up with the trends and I can proudly say that Nagaland is one of the fashion centres of the country. I can see that Mumbai and Delhi is no less than Nagaland in fashion.

Bethunglo Ngullie, a graduate from the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT), Guwahati is loyal to her ethnic roots, incorporating and highlighting her culture in her designs. She has participated in many shows regionally and at the capital too. But her dream remains to showcase her collections at the Lakme Fashion Week, Mumbai.
One can catch Bethunglo’s design at the coming Miss North East 2015 and Miss India North East 2015 events.
