Castration means removal of both the testicles of the male pig. The importance of castration in male pig are-
1. It makes the pig more docile, easier to control
2. Speeds up the fattening of growing pigs
3. To avoid infighting of growing pigs
4. The quality of meat is better
5. The carcass traits after slaughter is higher than non-castrated pig
Age at Castration
1. Male piglet can be castrated after 1weeks of age
2. Adult breeding pig when it becomes old for breeding purpose can also be castrated at any age
3. Any pig to be castrated should be kept off feed for 10-12 hours before surgery
Care and Management after Castration
1. The castrated pig should be kept on dry and clean floor preferably in a separate shed for atleast a week
2. Fed semi liquid or laxative diet for 3-5 days
3. Follow strictly the course of antibiotics to be given as advice by the doctor
4. Apply the antiseptic spray or ointment daily as instructed
It is always advisable for the farmer to castrate male pig under trainedVeterinary Field Staffs or under the supervision of a Veterinary Doctor or bring it to the nearest Veterinary Health Centres to avoid any post-operative complication
