Dimapur, Dec. 17 (EMN): With an aim to reduce road accidents and mishaps, ICFAI University Nagaland conducted Road Safety Awareness Campaign at different locations in Dimapur district last week under the directive of Vice Chancellor, Prof C P. Alexander. The programme was part of the university’s “social responsibility” initiative
The campaign was organised to instil the message on the need for safe driving and obeying traffic rules amongst drivers of public motor transport.

The team led by Yeangao Konyak and Dr. Imtinungsang Jamir, National Service Scheme (NSS) Programme Officer along with IUN management trainees and NSS volunteers took part in the campaign by interacting and spreading road safety awareness measures amongst the drivers and pasted stickers on local taxis, auto rickshaws and distributed gifts for their services.
Road accidents are very common in India and Nagaland is not an exception, according to a statement issued by Dr. Imtinungsang Jamir.

As per the latest data available, road accidents claimed more than 1.4 lakhs lives and caused injuries to more than 4.7 lakh people in India last year, which translates into 405 deaths each day. The main causes of such mishaps are poor driving and badly maintained roads/vehicles, according to the statement.

The university has encouraged all the stakeholders, both public and private vehicles, motor cyclist and pedestrians to share the same responsibilities and empathy by implementing road safety law.
