Imphal ranks second coldest northeast capital after Shillong

Imphal, Jan. 29 (EMN): With a record low of 2.3 degree Celcius, Manipur’s capital Imphal has recorded 2.1 degree Celsius, as the directorate of Environment’s state climate cell weather has reported, to become the second-coldest capital city after Shillong in Meghalaya from among the seven Northeast states for the second time on Jan. 29 Mon.
Shillong recorded a minimum temperature of 0.7 degree Celsius while Imphal recorded 2.3 degree Celsius, the Indian Meteorological department (IMD) reports.
Nagaland’s state capital Kohima recorded minimum temperature of 6 degree Celsius; Aizawl, 4.6; Agartala, 8.4; Dispur (Guwahati), 9.2; and Itanagar at 10.9, the IMD report stated.
Similarly Senapati, also in Manipur, recorded minimum temperature of 0.2 on Mon. while Ukhrul and Churachandpur district headquarters recorded minimum temperature of 3.6 degree Celsius and 3.1 degree Celsius respectively.
Residents in Imphal continue to feel the chilly wind since the past three days. The maximum temperature recorded in Imphal on Monday was 21.98 against 22.2 degrees Celsius of Sun., sources in the state’s directorate of Environment added.
The minimum temperature in the state, which has been hovering around 4-5 degree Celsius since beginning of this month till the previous week, has gradually gone down since Sat., sources added.
Severe cold waves are also reported to have prevailed in the hill districts headquarters particularly in Ukhrul and Senapati for the past three to four days. With the sudden fall in temperature, consumption of charcoal is on the rise, according to charcoal traders in Imphal.
On Jan. 8, Imphal became the second coldest capital city after Shillong among capital cities of the Northeast states for the first time in 2018, after the temperature went down to 3 (2.5 degree Celsius according to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Manipur centre in Imphal, on that very day.
Jan. 13 was the coldest day (2.3 degree Celsius) in Imphal in 2010, according to ICAR report on Jan. 16 in 2017 was one of the lowest recorded temperature.
