ICFAI University to have skill centre soon

Dimapur, Feb. 28: Director of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Medziphema, Dr. Abhijit Mitra said talent can be acquired with hard work and learning through one’s mistake by believing in their capability. He refused to accept that talent is an individual gift as argued by many people.
Dr. Abhijit Mitra said this at the inaugural session of the two-day national seminar on ‘The role of skills and talent development in national economy’ at ICFAI University (IUN) Nagaland, Sovima on Tuesday. The seminar is being sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research – North Eastern Regional Centre (ICSSR-NERC) and organised by Department of Management Studies IUN.
Dr. Mitra reminded the students that many a time they will be put up in a situation when they are not prepared. He however said their skills will rescue them from such situations. ‘Skill without knowledge is also of no use. People differ from each other because of skills and talents,’ Dr. Mitra said. Guest of honour and CEO Telecom Sector Skill Council and former Signal Officer-in-chief, Indian Army, Lt. Gen. Dr. SP Kochhar, in his keynote address, remarked people from this region are accomplishing well. At the same time, he expressed that people from this region need to shed their outlook of working only in their respective region.
Emphasising on the important aspect of skills, Dr. SP Kochhar conveyed ‘education needs skill while skills require knowledge.’ While stating that imparting skills to artisans is the present need of the country, Dr. SP Kochhar lamented that industrial sector of the country are busy meeting their quarterly target and overlooking the accessible skills. He said industrial sectors should relate knowledge to practice and not overlook them.
Terming Indian education system as one of the best and has the best policy, he said youngsters should see that these policies are implemented.
Emphasising on GOI’s National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF)- a competency-based framework that organises all qualifications according to a series of levels of knowledge, skills and aptitude, Dr. SP Kochhar persuaded the student community to take advantage of such outcome.
He also informed the ICFAI University Nagaland students that a skill centre will be added soon in the University.
A book “Talent & Skills: Developing the Art” authored by Col. Dr. VRK Prasad, former Vice Chancellor ICFAI University Nagaland, was also released at the inaugural programme of the two day seminar.
After officially releasing his book, the author Col. Dr. VRK Prasad threw some light on his book and narrated the basic concept of his book. He said ‘skills and talent are two sides of the same coin.’ According to him skill is a basic thing and talent is the ultimate entity which is the result of continuous hard work. It may be noted here that Col. Dr. VRK Prasad had authored eleven books and edited five books.
