ICAR launches alternative mithun production system

Coinciding with the World Veterinary Day (WVD) on April 30, ICAR – National Research on Mithun (NRCM), Jharnapani, launched an alternative semi-intensive system of mithun rearing in the farmer’s field at Molvom village under Medziphema block, Dimapur district.
Launching the programme, Dr. H Rahman, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi, who was on visit to the institute on April 29 and 30, remarked that mithun could can be reared successfully only under free-range forest rearing system. However, with the decreasing forest coverage in the region, he recommended that it is imperative to find an alternative rearing system for mithun. Dr. Rahman also urged that such initiative is required to be replicated in other parts of the region.
Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director of the institute, informed that ICAR-NRC on Mithun already demonstrated the package of practices for semi-intensive mithun rearing system successfully in the institute’s Mithun farm at Medziphema. In order to demonstrate this alternative mithun rearing system in the farmer’s field, NRCM, under Tribal Sub-plan (TSP), distributed nine mithuns and one calf among three farmers of Molvon village namely Laljon Misao, Letthang and Veikhochong.
Dr. Mitra further emphasized the importance of mithun rearing under the semi-intensive system for income generation and to uplift of socio-economic conditions of the farmers. While referring that mithun is primarily used for meat, he coined that ‘M’ could also stands for milk, money and “Maiki’’ for marriages.
Molvom village, being adopted village of Nagaland Centre of ICAR-Research complex of NEH, the technologies developed by the Nagaland Centre were also showcased during the programme. The Head GB, Alet Misao of the Molvom village, expressed that it was a proud moment for 75 years old village, which is already known for Pineapple cultivation, being considered for the unique project.
