House-fire leaves 30 families homeless in Signal colony
Eastern Mirror Desk
Dimapur, March 23: At least 30 families were left homeless in the aftermath of a major house-fire that engulfed a residential pocket here at Y Zhimo colony in Signal Angami area, just behind Eastern Mirror’s main office on Friday night.
The massive fire that broke out at around 8 pm destroyed properties worth some few lakh. Residents of the locality were sent into widespread panic even as explosion of at least 10 LPG cylinders were reported.
The Dimapur fire department was reported to have received information around 8.20 pm, even though they could arrive at the site only after the houses were reduced to ashes ‘because of the narrow roads.’ At least they could prevent the fire from spreading further, sources said.
It was claimed that five fire engines from Dimapur fire station and two from Chumukedima were used. Residents of the locality have however disputed it. By the time most of these fire trucks arrived, the fire had already died down ‘naturally’, they claimed.
The Lhomithi Sumi church located right next to the site has offered to shelter the victims for the night. Detailed report could not be ascertained as Fire department officials were said to have been busy at the site while filing this report. No casualties were reported.
