Amenba inaugurates bamboo pavilion

[caption id="attachment_152604" align="alignnone" width="550"] Parliamentary secretary of industries and commerce, Amenba Yaden, at the exhibition cum sale of handloom and handicrafts product at bamboo pavilion in at Kisama on December 1.[/caption] Dimapur, Dec. 1 (EMN): Parliamentary secretary Amenba Yaden has inaugurated the crafts bazaar jointly organised by the Directorate of Industries and Commerce and NHHDC Ltd at the Bamboo Pavilion in Kisama, the venue of the ongoing Hornbill Festival which began on December 1. The pavilion is being funded by the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The craft bazaar has 103 stalls opened by local entrepreneurs and five stalls from other neighbouring states. Some prominent stalls included Chum Chum’s Bakers (Kohima), Smokey Joes Restaurant and Grill (Dimapur), My Bamboo Story (Kohima) by the Youth Net, etc. Under the banner of the Bamboo Story, a team from St. Joseph College, participating in the Youth Net’s intercollegiate entrepreneurship competition, have set up a stall selling indigenous goods and crafts and one interesting item being sold is the locally made boom box made of bamboo.

CM inaugurates hortiscape

State chief minister, TR Zeliang, inaugurated the floral gallery and farmer’s mela at Hortiscape at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, on December 1. Farmers from 11 districts are participating in the exhibition cum sale of flowers, fruits, vegetables and spices. Different associations, Self Help Groups (SHGs), and flowers growers from within and outside the State are exhibiting locally grown and horticulture products which are also put up on sale. In the flower exhibition section, various followers were put on display such as annuals, biennials, perennials, orchids (hybrids & indigenous), cactus, succulents, bonsais, and flower arrangement (dry and fresh) etc. In the fruit and vegetable section, varieties of indigenous and organic vegetables and fruits such as oranges, pumpkins, chilies, yam, pineapples, banana, lime and lemon, papaya etc are on display. Selected judges would determine winners in the flowers category of ferns & foliage, cacti & succulents, indigenous foliage & flowers, bulbs & tubers, orchids (indigenous & hybrid) bonsai, perennials, annuals & biennials, flower arrangement (fresh) flower arrangements (dry). Similarly, selected judges would determine the winners in the fruit and vegetables including oranges, peneapples, banana, kiwi, lime & lemon, papaya, guava, cabbage, cauliflower, cucurbits, broccoli, leafy vegetables, carrot, reddish, Naga mircha, large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, garlic, leek and tree tomato. The judges of the exhibition cum sale of flowers and vegetables were Arnvind Singh, Research officer CIH Medziphema; Additional Secretary of Husbandry and Veterinary Science; Temsunaro Aier, Associate Prof SASRD; Dr. Rokolhu Keditsu, Secretary of Forest; Imtienla; Limawati Ao, Director of IPR; Bendanglila, JDA Agri; Associate Prof, CS Maiti and Hoto Yeptho, Director of Land Resource Development. Prize distribution would be held on December 4 at Hortiscape.

Hornbill photo fest begins

[caption id="attachment_152605" align="alignnone" width="550"] Parliamentary secretary of information and public relations and SIRD, Imtikumzuk at the Hornbill International Photo Fest (HIPFEST) 2017 at Heritage Village, Kisama, on December 1.[/caption] Hornbill International Photo Fest (HIPFEST) 2017, a photography and art festival/exhibition, was inaugurated by the parliamentary secretary of information and public relations and SIRD, Imtikumzuk, at Heritage village, Kisama. HIPFEST is being jointly organised by the department of information and public relations and eastern art council, supported by the department of tourism. HIPFEST features various aspects of photography such as acrylic/oil painting, sketching, sculpture and photos. This year’s HIPFEST features a special art exhibition on watercolour and pencil on paper by Heather Laytons, senior lecturer of art in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester, who has a vast experience as an interdisciplinary artist. Some of the artists who have put up their art works for sale are Moanungsang, Asang, Sentiyanger, Toshi, Atsung Longchar, Neiphrezo and Bendangtoshi Lemtur. It also included a new form of modern art (Mount Crafting Design) by David Keneingutuo Sorunuo, 3D Modern Art by Akup and sculptures by T Meren Imsong. Altogether 45 participants are taking part in the photography contest on the theme ‘Colours of Nagaland,’ of which nine participants are in the children’s category (13 years and below). The judges for the competition are Heather Layton and acclaimed Naga photographers, Rokovor Vihienuo, and Merimvu Doulo. Another feature of the HIPFEST is the Glocal Film Fest to be held at ‘The Heritage’ on 5th and 6th December, 2017 from 3:00 pm to 7:00pm, featuring short films from North America and Nagaland. The HIPFEST exhibition would be opened from 10:30 am to 4 pm throughout the festival. The coordinator of the event, M Ababe Ezung informed that the results and prize distribution of the photography contest would be declared on December 7 and December 10 respectively.

Artists Corner draws massive attraction

Various art works, painting and sculptors are put up on display at the Artists Corner at the ongoing Hornbill festival which began on December 1. As many as twenty (20) artists are participating with about one hundred art works for the exhibition which were put up on sale. Promotion of visual art, portrait, cartoon, sketch, drawing etc and spot painting competition for students would be the main highlights of the ten-day long festival at Kisama. Art & Culture department official informed that a painting competition has been arranged on December 8 on the theme of clean election campaign. Art executive from Art & Culture department, Yanger Ozukum, who himself is an artist, is enthusiastically taking care at the exhibition. His art works were also put up on display. He has requested the public to visit the artist corner and buy the art pieces so as to encourage the participants. The art exhibition is being organised by the Art & Culture department in coordination with the Nagaland Art society.

Craftscape inaugurated at Kisama

The Craftscape is being organised by the Tribal Weave in collaboration with the department of tourism and art and culture department. Inaugurating the Craftscape, the chief guest encouraged the participants to continue improving the culture and traditions of the Nagas. The exhibition presented landmark distributions of tribal craft specialties by skilled artisans who embarked on dignified livelihoods in keeping alive the intangible heritage. The exhibits represented use of rudimentary tools and bare hands, dexterously hand crafted cane and bamboo basketry, woodcraft, metal work, beadworks and pottery, giving shape from past to the present. The craft items displayed at the stalls were Anghya Nyekok (The queen’s bag), Thevora (nettle shawl), pottery of Runguzu Nasa village, metal craft (a Konyak Naga gunsmith), Rakdi (head gear), Henachi Tei (banana necklace), traditional earrings, Nyek (beaded necklace), cotton processing in the Naga textile grammar, Khiamniugan traditional headgear.

MLA flags off horse and pony ride

At the flagging off ceremony, IP Khala, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, stated that the second edition was introduced basing on popular demand from the public so that the people could experience the ride with a nominal fees ranging from Rs 30 to 60.
