Govt. employees told not to involve in political activities

Dimapur, Feb. 20 (EMN): The chief electoral officer of Nagaland Abhijit Sinha has warned government employees not to engage in any political activities in the run-up to the Nagaland assembly elections on Feb. 27.
“You are not expected to take part in any political activities. Attention of all government employee is also invited to sec 129,134 and 134A of the Representation of people Act 1951, where no government servant is to act for furthering the prospect of any candidate, act as polling/counting agent and there is also penalty for breach of official duty in connection with conduct of election. These actions are punishable under the law,” read a statement from the CEO on Feb. 20.
The CEO has asked the government employees to be strictly impartial. “Every government employee is expected to promote the spirit of democracy by actively participating for a free, fair and peaceful election. It is the responsibility of every government employee being an agent of the government to educate the public on good practices during election so as to eliminate all electoral malpractices.
“All the government officials who are appointed as returning officer, assistant returning officer, presiding officer, sector officers and security personnel are once again reminded to discharge their statutory duties without any partiality and fear…if any official act in contravention of the legal provisions strict action shall be taken against him /her,” warned the CEO.
