Kohima, August 19 (EMN): While observing that the Nagaland was lacking in everything, Governor PB Acharya has called upon the Naga leaders to rise up and serve the people in a ‘new dimensional way’.
Addressing the 31st annual general meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society of Nagaland (IRCSN) today at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Acharya urged the leaders to render their best in order to transform the society.
“In order to progress, it is important in empowering the people and the society as a whole. It is time Nagaland has to discuss for the poor”, said Acharya.
Stating that the ‘poor’ were the weakest link of any society, the governor underscored the need to reach out to the ‘poorer section’ if at all the Naga society was to make progress in every field.
“Talking about serving the people with a new dimensional way, let us discuss for the poor with an open mind and without any criticism”, the governor said adding that “a society will not progress if the weakest link is neglected.”
Mentioning that the state and centre have many welfare projects, Acharya stressed the need to reach out to the beneficiaries with those schemes.
On IRCSN membership, the governor questioned as to why the membership has come down over the last few years. He pointed out that eight out of eleven districts have no members in the IRCSN.
Acharya also lamented at the weak performance of the three mobile vans which have been reserved for emergency patients. It was informed that all the three mobile vans could extend help to 28 patients in the entire year.
“How better this organisation can serve its purpose more practically”, Acharya said and urged the IRCSN officials to find out new methods to reach out to the people.
Chief Minister TR Zeliang, who is the vice president of IRCSN, lauded the humanitarian activities undertaken by the society for the people during the past decades.
“The society, since embarking on its noble mission of working for the needy, have indeed covered much ground s notwithstanding the limited resources”, Zeliang said adding “we also needs (sic) to humbly acknowledge the fact that much more needs to be done.”
“As we march forward in our humble mission of reaching out to the unreached and providing support to people in distress, let us be guided by the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross – humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality”, the CM said and urged the officials and staff to work untiringly and with the same degree of dedication and selflessness in the days to come.
Earlier, the report on the business session of IRCSN held on August 18 was presented Dr Kepelhusie Terhüja, general secretary of IRCSN, while Dr Neiphi Kire, member of the IRCSN managing committee, delivered the welcome address.
The programme, chaired by Dr SI Tushi Ao, vice chairman IRCSN, commenced with invocation pronounced by State chaplain, Kuzeirang Thou, while Sanctuary choir, Union Baptist Church presented two songs.
