Dimapur, Oct. 11: Despite the morning showers of rain, St Paul Higher Secondary School in Dimapur began its three-day long annual sports event on Oct. 11 at the school premises.

During the inauguration programme, Secretary of Finance and Land Resource, Y Kikheto Sema, hoisted the flag, marking the commencement of the event.

Addressing the students, Sema said: “Games and sports should be imparted as extra-curricular activities.” It should not be an option but rather to take it up as a compulsory subject. Adding that, he said, ‘It is true that students should study hard and produce good result. But students also ought to enjoy physical activities for good health.’

In western countries, monotony of lecture has been reduced by imparting vocational training to students in a holistic manner. Games and sports are also incorporated as part of the academic syllabus, he said.

Sema is of the view that confining to the four walls of classroom alone is not enough and added that outdoor activities such as games and sports is always a better option.

Sub-divisional officer of Public Works Department, research laboratory cell, Dimapur, M John Lotha spoke on importance of sportsmanship and team spirit. He said that sport reveals the true character of an individual and urged them to show patience, obedience, respect and have a team spirit.

He recounted his schooling days where he used to participate enthusiastically in almost every game. ‘Involving in those activities have build, shape, and transformed me into what I am today,’ he said. Therefore, he urged students not to take games and sports for granted but take it as an opportunity to compete for dedication and discipline. He added that the students must participate to win the hearts of friends, opponents, and audience.
