Dimapur, Jan. 12: Mutual opposition to the State government’s bullish attempt to conduct elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Nagaland with 33% seat reservation for women candidates has brought the three constituent tribes of Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) together with the Western Chakhesang Hoho (WCH) and the Chakroma Public Organisation (CPO).

The five tribe organisations on Thursday held a meeting at Dimapur and resolved to ‘insist all the intending candidates (from their respective areas) to withdraw their candidatures with immediate effect.’ The CNTC consists of Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur, Western Sumi Hoho and Lotha Hoho Dimapur.

The CNTC members had already formed a Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) for the same issue on January 2 last. On Thursday, membership to the JCC was expanded with the inclusion of representatives of Western Chakhesang Hoho and the Chakroma Public Organisation.
The committee members told a press conference that they have decided to form a Joint Action Committee from the five tribes “involving our respective tribe youth organisations and other likeminded youth organisations to accomplish the demands of the Naga public”.

They insisted that their opposition to the ULB elections in its current form was not a mere protest or agitation but a people’s movement. “The JCC earnestly appeals the Naga public to cooperate with our call and to stand prepared to face any eventuality.”

It also appealed the State government to ‘understand the sentiment and honour the voice of the people.’ The press conference was conducted by JCC convener Supu Jamir, and co-conveners Vekhosayi Nyekha and Lichio Kithan.

The JCC has two other co-conveners, Zheshito Swu and Luola-u Usou. Reinbo Ngullie, Mughato Awomi and Mozen Aier are the joint secretaries.
