KOHIMA, OCTOBER 21: Energy Efficient Service Limited (EESL), a joint venture under the administration of Ministry of Power, Government of India, plans to distribute over 25 lakh LED bulbs, 1.5 lakh energy efficient fans and 2.5 lakh tube lights to people on upfront payment in Nagaland. The company will distribute the energy efficient fans, bulbs and tube lights under the Energy Efficient Nagaland called Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme.
Launching the Energy Efficient Nagaland at Kohima Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall on Friday, Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Dr. Neikesalie Nicky Kire stated that energy efficiency is the need of the hour, saying improving energy efficiency is an excellent opportunity for mitigating climate change.
Kire believed that the consumers of the State understand their significant role in this change and will come forward to make the State energy efficient, which will also help in reducing electricity bills. He congratulated the district administration and the EESL for having initiated such a programme and expressed confidence that better outcome would prevail in future. Taking the chance, he appealed to all the officers from different districts to initiate the programme and move forward in their respective districts to see that the whole State is covered under this programme.
“Very often we keep blaming the Power department without giving them what they require,” said Dr. Nicky and added that the Power Dept requires heavier transformers as the existing transformers are quite old and cannot take the load.
The scheme aims to promote efficient use of energy at the residential level, enhance awareness of consumers about the efficacy of using energy efficient appliances and aggregating demand to reduce the high initial costs, thus facilitating higher uptake of LED lights by end users.
Under this scheme, consumers will be able to buy high quality 9W LED bulbs at a discounted rate of Rs 70 against the market price of Rs 350, energy efficient fans at a price of Rs 1150 and tube lights at a subsidized price of Rs. 230.
This is an initiative of Kohima district administrative taken up to effectively tackle with the problem of wide gap between high demand and short supply of power, a general phenomena throughout the State resulting to undesirable but unavoidable load-shedding, the worst being during festive seasons of Christmas.
Presenting the grim scenario of power status in Kohima district, DC Kohima Rovilatuo Mor, in his keynote address, said with the installed capacity is 24 MVA, the demand for power is 26 MW added with an increase of 2MW every year.
With the approaching festive season, Mor said the unpleasant scenario of frequent load shedding will only continue to aggravate. He, therefore, said the district administrative has taken up this initiative in direct liaision with EESL for procurement/distribution and installation of highly subsidised LED bulbs, tubes, fans throughout the district.
He also informed that public awareness campaigns on power economy will soon follow so as to reduce power consumptions, which will reduce power bills for the individual consumer and overall load shedding.
While stating that detail guidelines and modalities had been worked out for implementation of this initiative to avoid any misuse of the subsidised supplies and to achieve positive interest of the public, Mor solicited the cooperation, support and active partnership of NGOs, local bodies and departments.
The UJALA Scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 5, 2015, with a target of replacing 77 crore inefficient bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs. It was informed that currently, over 17.22 crore LED bulbs have already been distributed across 18 states and 5 Union Territories.
EESL is a joint venture of NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation and POWERGRID set up under Ministry of Power to facilitate implementation of energy efficiency projects.
It was also informed that all UJALA domestic appliances can be purchased from all DM and SDO offices in all the 11 districts of the State. EESL provides free of cost replacement for all technical faults for three years, while replacements can be done through any of the distribution counters that would be operating within the city.
