Kohima, March 10 (EMN): Mevuhole Felicita said education is the strongest tool for empowering women. She also said educated women can identify their strength and abilities and move forward in building the society.
Speaking at the culmination programme of National Swachh Shakti Week cum International Women’s Day, on March 8, at office of Executive Engineer PHED, Rural Division, Kohima, said that celebrating women’s day has become an integral part of the curriculum to spread the awareness of women empowerment, their roles and achievements. History of women’s day is a testament of power, sovereignty and democracy, she added.
She also said women need to be empowered as she is the backbone and sword crafting for the future generation.
Felicita stated that much awareness have been created to acknowledge women’s contribution and sacrifice to the society, however, she lamented that women were still considered inferior to men. Further, she added that women empowerment does not mean for women to become powerful and dominate men, but they should be considered as equal gender in every field.On sanitation, Felicita said lack of adequate sanitation effect women and girls in particular. She also said access to clean water and sanitation will transform the lives of women and girls by improving their health, dignity, well being and independence.
Sanitation and Hygiene consultant of DWSM PHED Kohima, Thepfulie Theunuo stated that women should be the flag bearer of change and challenged the womenfolk to be bold in spreading awareness in community sanitation.
While highlighting the weeklong programme of the Swachh Shakti week, he said activities such as painting competition among girl students on the theme “Vision/ dream of a clean village,” awareness campaign on menstrual cycle to girl child, mass cleaning and an exposure trip for the women group was organised.
