The district administration and developmental authorities of Mokokchung have been asked to work on the still-languishing Inter-State Bus Terminus and make it functional at the earliest possible time. A local youth organization said that the transport facility had not been serving its purpose since its inauguration by the then chief minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio.
Absence of a number of amenities in the terminus such as water and electricity is said to have been preventing use of the station. The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) issued a press release on Wednesday, July 1.
The organization said that it was “much encouraged” at the initiative of the district administration headed by Deputy Commissioner Sushil Kumar Patel, and villagers of Khensa village and concerned citizens of Mokokchung in their endeavor to make the Inter-State Bus Terminus in the town operational.
Members of the youth organization met with the deputy commissioner of the district on Tuesday, June 30, in his official chamber. The administrator is said to have informed that the water and electricity problems that the terminus had been facing had now been solved. The administration would “bring about the latest status of the terminus at the monthly DPDB meeting in July” the youth organization quoted the administration as having stated.
The multi-crore ISBT, which was constructed with the funding from North East Council, was inaugurated by the then chief minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio on August 1. The press release said the bus terminus ‘had not been serving its purpose for the past four years though the government and the public had high expectations from this project’.
In the words of the MTLT, the citizens “welcomed this NEC funded ISBT project with open arms”, and had rendered all support towards this project.
Earlier, the District Planning and Development Board of Mokokchung had noted that the function of the ISBT was being hindered due to lack of electricity and water supply facilities. The district deputy commissioner had assured that the administration would look into the matter and ensure that the ISBT became functional.
The press release stated: “The ISBT is a very important lifeline not only for the department but for the socio-economic development for the district of Mokokchung; this ISBT will be more beneficial especially for the nearby villages and for the town. If this ISBT is made fully operational then it would mitigate the unemployment problem and would help in the expansion of the township. In turn, It will solve the traffic congestion and parking problems, provide ease to the commuters, and more so for the long distant travelers coming from outside the district”.
The district administration of Mokokchung is asked to “carry out its dedicated objective to make the ISBT functional at the earliest possible time”. The public of Mokokchung and travel agents, taxi drivers, and the various unions are asked to cooperate with the district administration “with regard to the full-fledged functioning of the ISBT for the welfare of the public in general”.
