Diphu food poisoning: 17 people, seven children hospitalized

Diphu, Oct.11 (EMN): At least 17 people including seven children were admitted to Diphu civil hospital, in nearby Assam, reportedly after consuming what is suspected to be unhygienic food on today.
According to reports, a group of people from the Rengma community had fellowship at Rengma Colony on Oct. 10 around 5:30 PM. After the fellowship, sandwich was believed to have been served to the members, according to reports. After consuming the snack, all those who ate it including the owner of the house Ashweng Rengma and his son, were then admitted to Diphu civil hospital early this morning, reports said.
Twenty-five sandwiches were reportedly bought from a Roy Bakery on Oct. 10 evening by Ashweng Rengma for the home service at his house. The 25 sandwiches were then distributed among the church members. ‘Those who did not consume the sandwich were not affected even my wife was not effected but on the other hand me and son were got infected after consuming sandwich,’ said Ashweng Rengma to this reporter. Also, some of the members who reportedly took sandwiches from home service for their grandchildren were also affected after eating from it.
Dr. A Kathar, child specialist at Diphu civil hospital informed that so far seven children including 11 females and six males were admitted to the hospital with similar symptoms. Clinically, at a time having symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, dehydration, loss motion, and dysentery it is food poisoning. All the admitted patients were seen with the same symptoms, Dr. Kathar said.
The Rengma Naga Students Union (RNSU) and the Karbi Students’ Association and other social organisations leaders have lodged an FIR against the owner of ‘Roy Bekary’ at the Diphu Police Station this afternoon.
According to Information from the students leaders, the bakery will be remain closed till an enquiry is done and all the medical expenses will be borne by ‘Roy Bekary’ if needed for ‘far treatment.’
The police department has informed that Roy Bekary’s owner confessed that the sandwiches were made and sold to Ashweng Rengma; 25 pieces were brought by Rengma. The bakery reportedly made a total of 31 pieces out of which 25 were bought by Ashweng. The remaining sandwiches were sold to the individual but no complaint has been made so far from other individuals, available information said.
Till the filing of this report, 17 people had been admitted in the isolation ward of the Diphu Civil Hospital.
It was also seen that the bakery did not kept any identification marked such as signboard in front of the shop.
