IMPHAL, Dec. 8: A 66-year-old man has died in Manipur while standing in a queue to withdraw cash at a government counter in Imphal, reports have said.
A pensioner of Telecom office, Ak Ibohanbi, a resident of Thoubal Wangma Taba in Manipur’s Thoubal district, had gone to the General Post office counter in Imphal to withdraw cash on December 5 afternoon but collapsed and fainted.
Those in the queue raised an alarm and rushed him to the Regional Institute of Medical Science hospital here on the same day. However he was declared dead on December 7 morning, reports added.
The incident comes after the centre’s surprise announcement to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes on November 8 which sparked confusion across the country with lakh of consumers queuing outside banks, ATMs and other cash counters to change or withdraw limited amount of old or new notes.

Two arrested for damaging ATM
In another development, two persons have been arrested on charges of ‘destroying’ an ATM here after failing to get cash on Wednesday. The arrested persons are Hemchandra Oinam and Bobby Nameirakpam who entered an ATM booth belonging to the SBI at the PWD complex on Tuesday evening to draw money. They alleged smashed the screen and the machine itself when they realized the ATM was ‘dry.’
Most ATMs in Manipur are shut due to lack of cash following the demonetisation of high value currency.
