Eastern Mirror: When did you realize your passion for music? Do u play any instruments?
Sarah M Yepthomi: My love for music dates back to my growing years in school when Spice Girls were the icons of many young girls. Growing up listening to their songs drew me to music and it was the popular hit song “Wanna Be” which made me choose music as a field. And now I should say I’m living that dream.
I play the piano.

EM: Tell us something about your musical background and influences?
Sarah M Yepthomi: My musical influence goes a long way back, to my late grandfather who was not a musician himself but had a passion for good music and also my dad who is a musician himself. Their zeal for music made me more enthusiastic and these two men have had a major role as my musical influencers.
EM: What is it about music that you love so much?
Sarah M Yepthomi: Music to me is all about expression and connection, and I especially love the fact that music can tell stories and inspire people.

EM: How difficult as a female artist, is it to make a name for yourself in the music industry?
Sarah M Yepthomi: Nagaland is known to be a state with talented musicians. But the music industry is still in a nascent stage. So not only as a female artist but also as an upcoming singer it is very difficult to reach people with your music without a platform and it’s hard to create a niche in the industry when you are a budding singer in a budding industry.

EM: Do you think you could have come this far with your music and receive the recognition if you did not win the “You know you got it” contest?
Sarah M Yepthomi: The “You know you got it” contest has given me a platform where I was able to present my God gifted talent and for which I am ever grateful. But even if it had not happened I’m sure my passion and love for music would have taken me forward.

EM: What changes would you like to see in the music industry of Nagaland?
Sarah M Yepthomi: I believe that Nagaland’s music industry will promote music talents of the state with the right platform. So I would like the audience to encourage and promote local artistes by supporting us with our music.

EM: How would you say you have matured over the years in your career?
Sarah M Yepthomi: My career is yet to take off on a personal front and having stepped into the industry as a newbie I’m just growing day by day, discovering the genre of music that I am fond of and specialize in.

EM: Who do you look up to in the music industry of Nagaland? Why?
Sarah M Yepthomi: Well there are three people who I really (look up to in the music industry of Nagaland,Alo wanth, Kevi Phucho & Tali Angh (hehehe)……..more importantly because I connect to their music.

EM: What can we expect from you by the end of this year?
Sarah M Yepthomi: Hopefully by the end of this year more people will come to know about my music and there should be a single release or a new album out very soon.
