The talented Johnny D’ascoli is a freelance makeup artist and hair stylist! He completed his Diploma on Hair and Makeup from New Delhi and after years of experience at the country’s capital he is now bringing his skills back to Nagaland, the place where he first found his calling.
Johnny’s passion and hard work found him working on stars such as Diya Kumara, Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja, Lisa Ray and many more in the entertainment world. In 2010 he had won the best hairstyling award from L’Oreal professional. He’s breaking boundaries and stereotypes for aspiring artists, both male and female and has created a niche for himself with his finesse for the two arts. Read on to know more on Johnny and his beauty tips.

Eastern Mirror: How did you start in the hair and makeup industry? Tell us your journey.
Johnny D’Ascoli: From the very beginning I was very passionate about hair and makeup. As far as I can remember I started doing what I love from my high school days. I did my diploma from HNS (Hair and Shanti) New Delhi 2009 and short-term course from L’Oreal professional New Delhi. After which I interned for Celebrity and Bollywood Makeup artist Anu Kaushik. Then I was placed as the color technician at 10 on 10 Studio.

Eastern Mirror: As a hair and makeup artist, what types of events do you cover, what’s your schedule like?
Johnny D’Ascoli: Back there in Delhi I am always packed with a hectic schedule, which includes shoots for TV serials, Ads and my personal socialite clients. And here in Nagaland I’m freelancing for bridal make up, party make up, fashion shoots, shows and production houses. Also as a makeup artist I travel a lot too for my clients outside Nagaland.

Eastern Mirror: What sets you apart from other makeup artists?
Johnny D’Ascoli: As an artist we all have our own unique signature styles, things we believe in and stand for.

Eastern Mirror: Give our makeup mania readers your best beauty tips and common mistakes that people make whilst doing their hair and makeup.
Johnny D’Ascoli: Here in Nagaland I mostly find girls with Mongolian features so for eyes I’d suggest applying black gel liner on the upper lid and white liner on the lower lid to create an illusion of bigger eyes. Also before you do your face make up it’s always wise to use face primer to settle the makeup and your skin tone. Talking about hair I notice that most Naga men and women go for hair straightening and fashion coloring but they lack concern later to take care. So always use hair masks and oil your hair (Olive and Amla).
Eastern Mirror: How do you keep up with all the new trends and styles? How do you include them into your makeup catalog?
Johnny D’Ascoli: I update myself from all the international fashion weeks through their newsletters and from make up blogs. How I include them in my make up routine is that I get inspired from their work and I create this fusion with my own signature.

Eastern Mirror: Being a male in the makeup industry, how has that been a challenge in a predominately female-based beauty industry?
Johnny D’Ascoli: Tables have turned in this world at the present era. What boys can do, girls are capable of doing it and so vice-versa. At the very beginning of my journey, I faced some difficulties in doing make up on girls. But then I worked even harder and devoted myself towards my dreams. After some weeks, gender didn’t bother me. As a result I finally achieved the position that I am in now.

Eastern Mirror: Who is your beauty icon and why?
Johnny D’Ascoli : My beauty icons are Anna Wintour (British vogue editor and Karl Lagerfeld (designer Chanel) because despite their age they keep themselves updated with every trend, yet never compromise their true self, their signature.

Eastern Mirror: Tell us about your favorite type of art?
Johnny D’Ascoli: My favorite art would be special effect art, because you don’t usually get to see this genre of art. It’s something different and new especially in Indian market aspect.

Eastern Mirror: What are the 5 Items you keep with you all the time?
Johnny D’Ascoli: Primer, Foundation Palette, Compact Powder, Hair Spray and Lip Gloss.
