Our nuanced understanding of the intricacies of today’s Naga situation is not the only factor that may give serious hiccups to our movement amid an otherwise progressive narrative. Our egos and vested interests swarming before us are also major stumbling piles. For this reason, we may not be wrong to say that the Naga case has been haunted at this best of times—hobbled by our own creations to complicate the situation. Such development is detrimental to the occasion and contains tremendous energy of explosion. With this, there lies a dangerous portent, more so because we continue to ignore this realization. This column would like to advocate that even if one would like to sound practical, restraining the urge to do so at this critical juncture, if the general interest of the Naga family is going to be affected by ones’ perceived practicality, will be considered a commendable service to our movement. Yes, the strong urge to indulge in destructive activities is driven by the fact that loose talks or unnecessary activities are popular balms today because they can suit ones’ situation and also soothe ones’ frustration temporarily at times. Our failure to stick to the very core reason of our movement presents us this farce. Whatever phase we are passing through at the moment we should not forget that our “struggle is to become a people and to grow as a nation”. According to noted Naga thinker Niketu Iralu, “What we are meant to do is to learn from our mistakes by maturely and responsibly acknowledging where we have gone wrong….we are entering a new year and a new situation where all Nagas of all tribes, factions and parties must take a united solemn pledge that that no faction or tribe will use violence and force to gain their own advantage at the expense of others. Nagas will no longer allow the darkness of hatred and violence that they have endured to return. The Government of India engaged in ceasefire and negotiation talks with various groups will be held equally responsible if violence and force will be used to implement any settlement and let the Nagas continue to suffer.” Meanwhile, this column hopes that our torch bearers will finally present a common front against what indubitably is the dangerous trend confronting the Naga movement.
