Church worker arrested for raping minor in Kohima

Kohima, Feb. 1 (EMN): Kohima police has arrested one person on charges of raping a minor girl at Midland colony in Kohima.

According to police sources here, the accused identified as 34-year-old Robert Debburman from Tripura, has been forwarded to judicial custody where he will undergo trial in the court. Concerning the victim, aged 11, police said they would consult with the district child welfare committee.

However, till the time of filing this report, the District Child Protection Unit of Kohima was yet to receive any communication concerning the incident.

Midland Panchayat condemns
In a statement issued on Friday, the Midland Panchayat said the accused was a ‘Nagamese Coordinator’ under City Church, Kohima.

“It is to mention that the minor is staying as helper to Robert Debburman. The rape incident came to light when the minor girl came to fetch water in nearby vicinity, and revealed to the colony people, a number of times that her uncle, Robert Debburman, used to molest and rape her on different occasion in his house under Midland Colony, Kohima,” it stated.

The council has expelled the accused for life from the colony. It appealed for “severest punishment” to the accused; and prayed for God’s grace and mercy upon the victim and her family “at this dark hour in their life.”
