Dimapur, Dec. 15: Chumukedima Town in Dimapur has declared the winning wards for the ‘cleanest ward award’ the results of which were declared at the Chumukedima Town Council (CTC) hall, on December 15. The event was an initiative of the Swachh Survekshan for 2019 for cities to improve urban sanitation.
The first prize of INR 20,000 went to ward 2; second cash prize of INR 15,000 to ward 8 and third prize money of INR 10,000 to ward 5. The administrator of Chumukedima town, Avizo Nakhro informed Eastern Mirror that the parameters for the competition were ‘drainage cleanliness, road cleanliness,’ and general overall cleanliness; community-led innovations to address sanitation and cleanliness; and festival decorations.
Nakhro said that the objective of the Swachh Survekshan initiative was to encourage large scale citizen participation, and ensure sustainability of initiatives for garbage-free environments, and open defecation-free cities. It also aims to provide credible outcomes that would be validated by third party certifications; to institutionalize existing systems through online processes and promote information among all sections of society about the importance of working together to make towns and cities a better place to live in.
Additionally, he said, the initiative also intends to foster a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities to improve their service delivery systems to citizens, and to create cleaner cities.
