Children sensitised on ill effects of tobacco

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 27: Youth Department of Salesian College of Higher Education (SCHE) in collaboration with ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) conducted a ‘Tobacco cum drug addiction camp’ for the students and street children at Institute of Development and Leadership (IDL) building, River Belt Colony, Dimapur, on November 27. District Nodal Officer of National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Dr. C Tetseo was the resource person. He was assisted by Dr. Arenla. In his presentation, Dr. Tetseo pointed out the addictive nature of tobacco and drug. He said tobacco has many poisonous ingredients which cause various diseases in areas such as mouth, teeth, difficulty in opening the mouth, heart attack, lungs, damage of blood vessels, decay of fingers and toes. Besides, it also causes lips, wind pipe and throat cancer. Speaking about the second hand smokers, he remarked it affects ear, causes pneumonia, asthma, TB in children and abnormality in babies when inhaled by pregnant women. Vice principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Fr. Michael Hriiyio Phimu, exhorted the participants to avoid all types of tobacco and drugs related products and stay healthy. He invited all to become the agents of change and make our society tobacco free. Earlier, Youth Director of SCHE Fr. Christudoss Anthony welcomed the resource person, guests and all the participants. He mentioned that tobacco and drugs are ruining health, morality, future and lives of people in general. He stressed that all right thinking people should cooperate with government’s effort to eradicate tobacco use and create a healthier society and brighter future for the younger generation.
