Dimapur, March 29 (EMN): Children, and by extension students, are society’s greatest ‘natural resource.’ Events such as sports help to nurture their minds and educate them in applying the spirit of teamwork in their lives, students of a school in Dimapur were told by an Assam Rifles officer recently.

The sports week of an educational institution in Dimapur, Cornerstone school and college, has begun. The opening ceremony to the event was conducted on March 29 in the premises of the school.

A special guest for the event, Colonel VS Shikarwar of the 32nd battalion of the Assam Rifles, addressed the opening ceremony. He called the mind of children the ‘greatest natural resource.’

‘We all are living in the age of instant gratification… but that doesn’t mean success will happen in an instant,’ he said. The military official encouraged the students to trust their hearts but think, and not be afraid of fault.

As an optimist himself, the colonel said, “Hit your wagon on to something that is bigger than yourself, and look for a goal that goes beyond your narrow self-interest”.

Also, Colonel VS Shikarwar talked about the advantages of sports education. It develops the mind and nurtures a spirit of sportsmanship; team building and ‘give wings’ to passion. Sports prepare a child to become a liberal individual and to apply the sporting spirit in all aspects of day to day life, he said and encouraged the children to compete and enjoy the games.

The guest of honour for the event was Dr. KP A IIyas, Commissioner of Dimapur police. Addressing the event, the commissioner requested the faculty members of the school to allow the children to have a level of freedom at least until the age of 10 years. He motivated the school children to think about their life from now and not after they will have graduated.
