Kohima, March 8 (EMN): The 27th Annual Sports Meet of Charity School, Kohima got under way at D. Khel ground, Kohima on Wednesday March 8, under the theme “beyond the surface”. Over 300 students are taking part in various disciplines like football, volleyball, olympic handball, basketball, futsal, tug of war, mad olympic and square ball.
The students taking part have been divided into four groups – CSK Challengers, CSK Knight Riders, CSK Sunrisers and CSK Warriors and the events will culminate on March 10.
Inaugurating the event, Chief Guest, Oken Jeet Sandham, President of the Muaythai Federation of India (MFI), expressed his happiness on seeing a large number of students turning up to take part in the three-day students’ sports extravaganza.
The Chief Guest, who is also the Editor of NEPS News, encouraged the students taking part in the sports to develop the sporting culture and said that the Nagas could excel in the field of sports. He urged them that they should take the sports seriously and not as casual. He reminded them as to how in countries like China where children as young as 4 to 5 years old had been sent to Sports Gymnasiums to train in various disciplines, besides there had been world class sports infrastructures and qualified coaches. He, however, regretted on the lack of sports infrastructures and also no qualified coaches in their State.
He also suggested that those youngsters who wanted to take up sports seriously should focus mostly on individual sporting disciplines like boxing, martial arts, archery, cycling, gymnastics, tennis, badminton etc as they have ample chances to excel in these areas rather than team-games like hockey, football, basketball etc.
He urged the students to develop the culture commitment, dedication and most importantly discipline which was essential towards achieving their goals.
Assistant headmaster Avilie Dzuvichu chaired the inaugural function while Teacher Shanti Raikhan pronounced the invocation.
