Naga Football Club downed the Director General of Police (DGP) XI 3-0 to lift the first Captain Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament held at Kohima Local Ground.
The tournament which had the participation of 24 teams was organized by the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North), under the aegis of HQ 3 Corps.
Playing a lopsided final match, Naga FC, a newly formed team with the conglomeration of players from different past teams, outplayed their opponents and thereby became the first team to lift the trophy.
Naga FC took an early lead through K. Thopi in the 8th minute, while Taliakum doubled the score line just before the interval in the 44th minute to end the first half with 2-0.
Entering the second half, the police team fought determinedly, but failed short in finding the net. All out to disappoint their rivals, K. Thopi went on to score his second goal and the third goal for his team in the 52nd minute to make it 3-0.
The champions fetched a cash award of Rs. 1.70 lakh along with trophy and citation, while the runners-up DGP XI also went home richer with Rs. 80,000.
The losing semifinalists – Mokokchung District Football Association and 164 TA Head Hunters of Naga Regiment also received Rs. 50,000 each and the other 19 participating teams got Rs. 5000 each.
Gracing the closing function as the chief guest, Director General of Assam Rifles, Lt. Gen. HJS Sachdev gave away the prizes.
