Dimapur, March 18 (EMN): Bosco College of Teacher Education (BCTE) also known as Bosco B. Ed College, Dimapur, celebrated its 15th foundation cum cultural day on March 17 with Joel N Kath, Chairman of ACAUT (Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation) as the chief guest and Fr. Nestor Guria SDB, Salesian Provincial of Dimapur, as guest of honour.

It may be recalled that the final permission to start the said college was granted by the National Council for Teacher Education on January 17, 2003. On March 1, 2003, the inaugural function was held and after three days B. Ed classes commenced in the first floor of Salesian College library. There were 55 students in the first year. Sr. Gertrude Rosakutty SABS was the first Principal of the BCTE.

On August 21, 2004, the newly constructed building of the college was blessed by Fr. Joachim D’Souza SDB, Regional Councillor for South Asia. Since then, B. Ed classes began in the present site with the college making rapid progress to become one of the premier B. Ed colleges in the State. Till date BCTE has been able to train 1300 teachers in the course of 15 years.

Though majority of the 147 students are from Nagaland, the presence of a few students from Assam, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal etc. enrich and lend a pan – India colour to the Bosco College of Teacher Education, Dimapur.

Fr. Dr. Joseph Thuruthel, Principal of BCTE, besides delivering the welcome address and presenting a brief history of BCTE, stressed on the need of knowing and preserving one’s culture while respecting those of the others.

Fr. Nestor Guria, guest of honour, said teachers have the noble task of identifying the qualities and talents of students and “train them to fly high.”
Joel N Kath, the chief guest, warned the teacher trainees of many divergent world views –secularism, liberal thoughts, scientific naturalism, post modernism etc., which were taught in western universities and can be harmful. He added that cultural hegemony comes in small doses such as ban on beef eating, universalising yoga, Sanskrit in CBSE schools, etc.

He said teachers have great responsibility to mould young minds and impart correct world views into them if we want to save the future society from moral decay and gradual destruction.

The other events of the foundation cum cultural day celebration included prayer dance, power-point presentation on the history of the college, colourful cultural dances, melodious solos and group singing and the final benediction.
