The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in Nagaland has, more or less, blamed the state Congress for the promulgation of Disturbed Area Act in the entire stretch of Nagaland. This accusation was contained in a press release issued by the chairman of the Political Affairs Committee of Nagaland BJP on Sunday.
It stated that prior to 1994, the DAA was effective only in areas falling inside 20 km long the border belts of Nagaland. “It was in 1994, when the Congress headed by SC Jamir was in power in Nagaland that DAA was extended to entire Nagaland.
“Thirty six Congress Legislature Party members had appended their signatures in the state government’s recommendation letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Out of them, 6 are dead, but the rest 30 members, including the incumbent NPCC president K Therie are living witnesses. They are directly answerable to the people of Nagaland.”
It claimed that the extension of the same Act this year was not a sudden development. “It was going on for the past twenty years. It was extended every year at a time. It was there even during the ceasefire period,” it stated.
The only difference, it claimed, was that this time around it was “given wide publicity unlike in UPA’s time.” I demanded an explanation from the state Congress on behalf on the “commissions” of the UPA regime.
“In the backdrop of the wide public outcry against DAA and appeals for lifting it, BJP Nagaland appeals to the state government to review overall law and order situation and accordingly give its considered opinion to the central government for the larger interest of the people of Nagaland. BJP Nagaland also appeals to armed forces to be sensitive to public sentiments and exercise restraint on civilians while carrying out their duties under AFSPA, 1958.”
