It has been increasingly observed in recent times that cyber frauds in the form of posting wrongful non-authentic morphed photos and videos with out-of-context propaganda text to mislead the public and create social, religious and political disharmony had been circulating in the cyber medium particularly in Whatsapp and Facebook. Several inaccurate photos and its out-of-context messages were also about burned churches etc, associating them with BJP. With concern, the BJP Nagaland have undertaken due verification and found that these social media photos were old, outdated and not in the context of the country nor of BJP nor of recent times. In reality, these photos were old, morphed and of foreign origin. In one instance, they were of churches in Bangladesh and Norway that had happened several years back for other accidental reasons. Such photos are being morphed or photoshopped and attached with inflammatory text messages and posted/emailed as election related propagandas. One such set of photos and email were found to be an anti BJP propaganda email chain letter originating in 2010 and earlier.

It is hereby informed that such falsification, factually incorrect or misleading informations, defamation, identity theft, social political and religious propagandas, banking frauds, fake accounts, etc., falls under the category of cyber crime and liable for legal prosecutions with IPC, PIL or FIR. With the increasing interconnectivity and usage of IT in important government, banking functions, social interactions, in the backdrop of the introduction of Jio4G and the Demonetisation process, the Supreme Court and the Union Ministry in consonance with the international efforts are increasingly monitoring the misuse of social media and actions initiated. In several parts of the country, District Courts and police have already initiated legal actions and issued instructions to social media users and administrators to curb such cyber crimes or face legal prosecutions.

The BJP Nagaland, in the interest to promote truth for creating a safe and upright society, cautions the general public not to be duped by such misleading lies and not share or repost them without properly cross checking and verifying them to avoid legal and police actions besides preventing social, religious political disharmony and tensions. It is the responsibility of every citizen to seek only truth and ensure that only truth prevails.

General Secretary (Media) & Spokesperson,
