Big exams! More than 4 lakh students to write in IGNOU examinations

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the largest university in the world, will be conducting examinations from June 1 in what is expected to be one of the biggest examination exercises in the region with more than 4 lakh students appearing in various subjects. The examinations for the academic year will continue till June 27.
“A total of 4,85,000 students are appearing the examinations in 3936 courses and the total number of answer scripts expected is 21 lakhs. The university has established 850 examination centres in different parts of the country,” the university informed on Friday, May 29.
Under Kohima regional centre in Nagaland, 2, 865 students are appearing for the examinations from 10 examination centres in Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, Mon, Longleng, Zunheboto, Tuensang, and Kiphire.
The exam centre of Dimapur Government College has been shifted to Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, also in Dimapur. Students who have applied for the exam centre have been advised to reach Don Bosco Higher Secondary School of Dimapur by 9:15 am
“Due to space constraints, 70 students who have applied for Dimapur Govt. College Exam Centre has been shifted to Salt Christian College of Teacher Education, Dimapur. These 70 students are informed to take note of the changes (reflected in the students hall ticket) and appear exams from Salt Christian College of Teacher Education, Dimapur,” the institution informed.
The unique feature of the IGNOU’s examinations is that there are 32 overseas centres for 2, 782 students, and 87 centres in the jails for 6, 154 jail inmates. Prominent centres outside the country in terms of number of examinees are in Kathmandu (757 students), Ethiopia (558), Jeddah (192), Oman (161), Kuwait (145), and Qatar (132).
“Besides this, exam centres have been established in far off places like Mauritius, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, Cameroon, Uganda, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Namibia, etc. Among the jail centres, Meerut has the highest number of examinees (581) followed by Allahabad (336), Aligarh (336), Tihar (246), Kota (233), Bareilly (222) and Varanasi (198),” the university explained.
For Indian students, centres have been established both in urban and rural areas “so that the students do not have to travel long distances to appear the examinations”.
Hall tickets have been uploaded in the university’s website www.ignou.ac.in. Tickets have been sent to each student by post, the IGNOU stated.
“Students can appear the examination on production of university identity card and the downloaded hall ticket. In case hall tickets are not available in the website students are advised to contact their respective Regional Centres for permission to appear the examination provided they have filled up the examination forms within the stipulated time and fulfill all the pre-conditions prescribed by the university for appearing the examination”.
The university has strictly prohibited possession of mobile phones and other electronic devices (expect simple calculators) inside the examination halls.
The examination answer scripts shall be evaluated by “empanelled evaluators” in zonal evaluation centres of the university established in Guwahati, Patna, Delhi, Pune, Chennai, Lucknow and Kolkata. As per the university’s ordinance, results will be declared within a period of 45 days.
