Dimapur, June 12 (EMN): Citing ‘aspiration of the people’, the Bhandari District Demand Committee (BDDC) has ‘reaffirmed’ its claim for a separate district for Bhandari subdivision in Wokha.
A press release from the committee on Tuesday informed that it ‘reaffirmed its commitment to go ahead on the aspiration of the people’s vision of having a district for an inclusive development and for the greater welfare of region’ during an emergency meeting on June 10.
Bhandari, it stated, was an Inspection Bungalow post in British India; later recognized as an administrative centre in 1957 after which it was named Bhandari sub-division. “Bhandari sub-division has the distinction of being the oldest among the existing sub-divisions in Nagaland. It consists of more than 80 recognized and unrecognized villages with a population of about 50,000 approx. (33,845 according to 2011 census) covers an area of approx.778.74 sq.kms. It lies at the distance of 70 kms away from Wokha district headquarters,” it informed.
The subdivision also shares a stretch of 115 km of boundary with neighbouring Assam, the committee informed. “The government of Nagaland has also declared Bhandari subdivision as an ‘economically and developmentally backward areas’ in 1983 which holds till today.”
