Twenty year old Benjongmenla Jamir from Dimapur took the top honour as the new Miss Nagaland 2013 in a glittering beauty pageant staged here Saturday evening at the State Academy Hall, Kohima. She bested seventeen other contestants from across the state to win the title. Abeny W Khuvung from Wokha and Shiirhosenuo Yano of Kohima were placed first and second runners up respectively. Miss Nagaland 2012, Imlibenla Jamir, who was the guest of honour at the beauty pageant, has crowned her successor.Besides her beauty and stage presence, young Benjongmenla most likely won the hearts of the crowd and the judges with her answer to a semi final round query that if she could change one thing in the society, it would be to do away with the “corruption of the government”. One who loves to read and feels strongly about social crimes, the new Miss Nagaland aspires to become a self-reliant entrepreneur.
Later talking to media persons, Benjongmenla said that with her new title, she looks forward to contribute to the society by becoming the voice of the less heard common people.
The pageant was graced by the presence of the Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Parvez Dewan, as the special guest.
Earlier in the evening, the Beauty and Aesthetics Society Nagaland announced that from 2013 onwards, the Miss Nagaland title holders will have a new additional purpose, a green purpose- to promote conservation of forest.
Besides a handful of gift hampers sponsored by different brands, the new Miss Nagaland 2013 walked away with a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh while the first and second runners up won Rs.70,000 and Rs.50,000 respectively.
The show was hosted by Toshizen Longkumer and former Miss Nagaland (1998), Tokatoli Sohe.
