Basketball coach rues lack of exposure in shaping sportspersons in Nagaland

Kohima, June 11 (EMN): Northeast have potential, stamina, and good physical but the thing is there is no person to guide them… we need to mould those potentials says the 50-year old Southern Railway basketball coach Prasanna Jyashankar who is currently coaching youngsters in the Summer Basketball Coaching camp in Kohima.

She said wherever there is talent in any sports discipline, tap those and bring a national coach to mould those talents and suggested that the government should bring more policy in bring coaches from around the country for more exposure. While also maintained that there will also be support from the Sports Authority of India to provide the basic necessity.

Prasanna Jyashankar said this in an interaction with the media on Tuesday evening at the coaching camp. The camp organised by Suncity Kohima and PB&F Sports Management that is underway at Christ King Higher Secondary School ground, Kohima and will conclude on July 15.

Southern Railways basketball coach, Prasanna Jyashankar is the main trainer of the coaching camp accompanied by SJ Coronet, International Basketball Federation coach. The camp is covering all basic fundamentals of basketball and will also be imparting advance training skills to the junior and senior categories. 63 including both boys and girls are undergoing intensive training for two weeks.

Former UBA coach also focused on the grassroots level which the state lacks the basic fundament and good coaches to progress in the sports field. “There is no trained basketball coach in Nagaland” and challenged that if she was given the opportunity, she would train the youngster and bring the U-14 and U16 national championship to Nagaland in three years time.

Jyashankar said education institution can only develop sportsmen in grassroots level and the best way to mould the sports person. She also suggested that there should sports quota in all the school and colleges in Nagaland. Expect in northeast, the other states provides sports quota and also free education for sportsperson in India, she said.

She suggested that Professional Basketball & Footballl Sports Management will set up an academy in Nagaland in the future with the support of the Sun City club.

Zhatuo Rutsa advisor to Nagaland Basketball Association and member of Sun City club said the camp aims to promote sports and give opportunity to the upcoming young talents in the state. He also said schools and university should focus on sports activity and the need to invest on the grass-root level.

While observing that Sun City Open Basketball tournament has not improve the standard of the game, it was the need of the hour for coaching camp to enhance the standard and quality of the players, he asserted.

While, it was informed that 30 players will also be selected for the basketball coaching camp for intensive advance training in Chennai in the winter vacation.

Brief history on Prasanna Jayashankar

She is presently serving as the coach of the southern railway women basketball for the last 17 years. She is also the first Indian women basketball player to represent India in five Asian Basketball confederation championships. She was the head coach of Bengaluru men’s team (season 2) and Chennai Slam team in season 3 and 4 where they were the champions in season 3 of the UBA professional Basketball league in India. She is also the national selector of Basketball Federation of India (BFI). While in Northeast, she also attended coaching camp in Assam at SFS School and Dimapur at Living Stone higher secondary School.
