The Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) on Tuesday stated that the “random assaults” by the Assam Rifles “upon any and all Nagas are direct affronts to democratic principles and gross violations of universal human rights.”
A press statement from the NPMHR today said that this observation has been drawn after its visit of “two of the injured victims” from the ambush near Pangsha in Tuensang.
“This time too, on the 28th of August 2015, the Assam Rifles ambushed a team of NSCN (K) cadres where “Nine (9) people including four civilians were shot dead” (sic), which the Assam Rifles proudly claimed to have done after “laying in wait since August 27 evening”.
“On 30th August, NPMHR visited two of the injured victims who mentioned that civilians who were not killed or injured were beaten mercilessly by the AR. No one is secure from their mindless acts and their random assaults upon any and all Nagas are direct affronts to democratic principles and gross violations of universal human rights,” it stated.
Ever since the abrogation of the Ceasefire by the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) in March 2015, there has been continuous military engagements in various forms of attacks and counter-attacks, ambushes, raids, roadblocks, frisking, and many other forms of psychological warfare and harassments which are carried out in the name of peace, it stated.
“Many precious lives from both the occupational forces and the resistance groups are lost or put to peril. We equally mourn for all the death and pray for their souls to rest in peace.”
On the other hand, the experiences of the unarmed and non-combatant civilians in all these decades of violence have only been that of human continued and compounded sufferings.
“The Naga civilians have been bearing the brunt of the scourges of war with absolutely no respite or remedies from the atrocities of Indian armed forces that are protected with full immunity by the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
“NPMHR expresses its deepest resentments against the total disregard for human lives by the Indian Armed Forces and notes that these acts of crimes against the Naga civilians committed by the Government of India through its armed personnel are crimes against humanity,” the NPMHR said.
