AR seize 140 gold bars, drugs in Manipur

Imphal, August 18 (EMN): 12 Assam Rifles troops apprehended one gold smuggler and seized 140 gold bars weighing 23.230 kg which is about Rs 6.969 crore approximately at market price at the vehicle check post located at Tengnoupal district on Thursday, according to Assam Rifles (South) release.
The gold bars were recovered from a bus (MN 04 7351) carrying wooden planks when the troops intercepted and stopped at vehicle check post Tengnoupal for checking. During thorough checking, some suspicious modification was noticed near radiator of the bus above the driver side head light, the release said. On further checking some suspicious packets were recovered from the modified compartment. On opening the packets, gold bars weighing approximately 23.230 Kg (140 bars) were recovered.
The driver of the bus Md Kamal Hassan from Kwakta Sevla Ward No 3 under Bishnupur District was interrogated and he revealed regarding 11 such packets of gold bars that were concealed in the bus, it added. The recovered gold bars along with the person are handed over to the custom authorities stationed at Moreh town, 110 km south of Imphal. In another incident, 12 Assam Rifles apprehended one drug smuggler carrying heroin and brown sugar worth approx Rs. 2.52 crore while checking a maruti van at the Khudengthabi check post, Tengnoupal district on Friday. On throughout checking, 282 grams of heroin and 278 grams of brown sugar were recovered from the van which was going to Imphal from Moreh. The above recovered drugs along with the person are handed over to customs authorities at Moreh for further investigation.
