AR jawan killed in Manipur blast

Imphal, June 30 (EMN): In yet another bomb attack in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, one Assam Rifles jawan was killed and two others sustained injuries- one critical, on Friday.

The incident took place when the victim jawan was on his duty at a vehicle check post manned by troops of 27 Assam Rifles at Lambui, a popular hill station about 55 km north east of the state capital along Imphal-Ukhrul highway under Shangshak police station in Ukhrul district around 7:05 a.m.

The impact of the explosion, said to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), was so powerful that the Self Loading Rifle (SLR) of the jawan was damaged beyond recognition while the lower part of the victim’s body was shredded to pieces, police sources said.

The deceased jawan has been identified as Biju Soruruwar (30) while the injured personnel were Havildar Yash Pal (37) and Rifleman Niran Ranjan (35). The injured personnel were evacuated to an Army hospital near here.

Officer in Charge of Shangshak police station said that a case has been registered in connection with the incident and investigation was on.

Additional security forces including the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police led by higher officers rushed to the spot and carried out search operations to apprehend the involved persons. However, there was no report of arresting any suspects. At the same time, no armed group operating in the state have claimed responsibility for the incident till the filing of this report.

On June 15, a Havildar of 17 Assam Rifles was killed while four others sustained injury also in an IED attack at Kasong, a remote village about 115 km north east of state capital in newly created Kamjong district bordering Myanmar.
