Ao Naga students of merit honored

KOHIMA, JULY 23 : An academic award called the NI Jamir Academic Excellence Award was given away to seven toppers from the Ao Naga community during a program at the Molu Ki, in Merhiilietsa of Kohima town on Saturday.

The award carries a cash award of Rs 10,000 and a citation. The event was organized by the Onpangkong Telongjem.

Meyionen, director of the 7 DIGP, Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, was the guest speaker for the event. In his address, the official urged the students to ‘be outstanding through hard work, self belief, confidence and clear vision.’ He also spoke about the need for a leader for the Ao Naga community at this juncture.
Giving away the awards to the toppers, he congratulated the recipients and lauded the family of NI Jamir for initiating the award.

Speaking on behalf of NI Jamir’s family, adviser to Chief Minister, Merentoshi R Jamir, urged the youngsters to give back to the society by becoming responsible men and women. They can be assets to the society and people by setting an example to them.

The advisor also pointed out that education was not only about studying and learning. Education is about inculcating ‘work culture as an important aspect of education,’ he said.

Also, stating that there were many “educated unemployed” persons in the state, Jamir pointed out that the government sector had reached a point of saturation. Therefore, he has advised the students to venture into entrepreneurship and the private sector as an option for employment.

Jamir also asked them to avail opportunities available for businesses and entrepreneurs that are bing offered by the government.

The seven awardees were Tongpangtangla from Changtongya; Limasangla Walling from Khar; Subolemla Pongener from Aliba; Pangerrenla from Changdang; Arenjungla Pongen from Chuchuyimlang; Nungsangmanen Longkumer from Longsa and Alemziingba Jamir from Sungratsu.

The programme, compered by Lipoksungkum Imsong and Chungmayangla Imchem, commenced with an invocation offered by Temjenmongba Sempo, associate pastor of the KABA. The benediction was said by O Chubala Jamir, president of the Kohima Watsu Telen.

The gathering was treated to a musical performance by the Kohima Ongpangkong Students’ Union too.
