The Governor of Nagaland has said that public amenities, facilities and infrastructure are essential to developing a society, but it is the citizens who have the onus to take the responsibility to develop own villages. PB Acharya was addressing a program in Dhansiripar, near Dimapur on Wednesday. The program was to mark a new school bus to the village. Acharya handed over the vehicle to the headmaster of the GVBS of Dhansiripar.
The school bus was donated by the Rotary Club of Mumbai North “for the development of Nagaland and motivated by Indian National Fellowship Centre,” according to the organizers of the program. The organizer issued a handout on Wednesday offering details about the governor’s speech during the program.
In his address, Governor PB Acharya said the “better management of education, electricity and employment” were essential to developing a society. However, the persons of society “should dedicate and take the responsibilities for development of own villages or areas”.
Acharya gave the example of Khonoma village, in Kohima village.
He said that there were many IAS officers in the village while about 70 doctors hail from Khonoma village, but there were “no any doctor in village hospital, no well road in that village”, the press release quoted him.
“How to serve the society and develop the nature of patriotism? If we take the responsibilities to develop our villages, it will be the real definition of patriotism in serving the society,’ the statement said. He said Nagaland possesses ‘much capabilities’ to be able to develop into a well-developed state among the northeastern states.
In other matters, PB Acharya said that the donated bus was an ‘ambassador closer’ to strengthen the relations between the societies of Nagaland and Maharashtra.
The governor also emphasized on native dialects. Acharya said primary education should be in “own mother language”.
‘We should learn English but English is only one language. We speak English, Hindi, Marathi etc. but not possible to make an English or a Marathi man.
I speak English, Hindi, Marathi but I was born in Karnataka. I am firstly Kokani. Due to lack of skills in teaching-learning process education is making us only degree holders,’ he said in his address.
He said that every school should connect to the development of society through imparting useful skills.
During the event, a message of the chief minister of Nagaland TR Zeliang was also read out: “It will go a long way in helping the students of this school and the people of the area, especially for the betterment of education.
Further, this will be a very positive step in closer relationship between Nagaland and other parts of the country in promoting emotional integration.”
